The Fiat Standard
The Debt Slavery Alternative to Human Civilization
In The Fiat Standard, world-renowned economist Saifedean Ammous applies his distinctive analytical lens to the fiat monetary system, explaining it as a feat of engineering and technology—just as he did for bitcoin in his global bestseller, The Bitcoin Standard.
Ammous examines the historical shift from the gold standard to today’s system of government-backed fiat money. He outlines the purposes and structural weaknesses of the fiat standard, explores its broader economic, political, and social implications, and analyzes how bitcoin may influence and ultimately reshape the global monetary order.
Drawing detailed comparisons between fiat currencies and bitcoin, Ammous explains how fiat money is effectively “mined” through the expansion of government-backed credit. He highlights the absence of inherent constraints on inflation and argues that persistent monetary expansion and intervention have led to significant distortions in global markets— including food, fuel, science, education, and capital allocation.
Through these comparisons, Ammous proposes that bitcoin may represent the next evolutionary step in monetary technology. Like fiat, it enables high salability across space, but without the burden of unchecked, debt-based expansion. Rather than culminating in disorderly hyperinflation, the transition toward bitcoin could resemble a debt jubilee and an orderly upgrade to the world’s monetary operating system—potentially transforming global capital and energy markets in the process.
